This 1953 musical is very much a vehicle for Doris Day, in the title role, as a wild cowgal who can outshoot and outsing any boy on the range. When an actress arrives in Deadwood and uses her feminine charms on Jane’s secret love, Wild Bill Hickock (Howard Keel), Jane tries to mend her tomboy ways. Not exactly up to the feminist code of honor, this is still energetic and Day is very perky. Of course, one could almost detect a homosexual undercurrent with the cross-dressing Jane, but this was Hollywood in the 1950s, so we best not. This won an Oscar for Best Song–”Secret Love,” by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster. –Rochelle O’Gorman

Upon its release in 1981, John Irvin’s version of Peter Straub’s bestselling horror novel was deemed one of the worst adaptations that the genre had ever produced. Now it’s available on DVD, and for the first time in widescreen presentation, and not much has changed. It’s still a nearly unwatchable dud. Fred Astaire, John Houseman, Melvyn Douglas, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. play old friends, members of the self-created Chowder Society, who get together and tell ghost tales. The scariest story of all, however, is the one they never speak to each other. Fifty years ago, the four men accidentally killed a young woman, and now she’s back (with much less meat on her bones) and seeking vengeance. Sound chilling? Well, in Straub’s hands it was, and the novel remains the author’s finest achievement. Irvin, however, distills Staub’s rich characterizations, gradual tension, and creepy atmosphere, and replaces them with aging golden oldies (only Houseman appears to be having any fun) hamming it up and hokey special-effect shots of a rotting corpse. The film moves about as quickly as its ancient cast could during a relay race. The whole thing has arthritis. –Dave McCoy

There’s no getting around a simple, basic truth: watching Lawrence of Arabia in any home-video format represents a compromise. There’s no better way to appreciate this epic biographical adventure than to see it projected in 70 millimeter onto a huge theater screen. That caveat aside, David Lean’s masterful “desert classic” is still enjoyable on the small screen, especially if viewed in widescreen format. (If your only option is to view a “pan & scan” version, it’s best not to bother; this is a film for which the widescreen format is utterly mandatory.) Peter O’Toole gives a star-making performance as T.E. Lawrence, the eccentric British officer who united the desert tribes of Arabia against the Turks during World War I. Lean orchestrates sweeping battle sequnces and breathtaking action, but the film is really about the adventures and trials that transform Lawrence into a legendary man of the desert. Lean traces this transformation on a vast canvas of awesome physicality; no other movie has captured the expanse of the desert with such scope and grandeur. Equally important is the psychology of Lawrence, who remains an enigma even as we grasp his identification with the desert. Perhaps the greatest triumph of this landmark film is that Lean has conveyed the romance, danger, and allure of the desert with such physical and emotional power. It’s a film about a man who leads one life but is irresistibly drawn to another, where his greatness and mystery are allowed to flourish in equal measure. –Jeff Shannon

It takes a Village to incarcerate The Prisoner. This set contains three mind-bending episodes from one of television’s most subversive series. Number 6’s (Patrick McGoohan) “strong sense of identity” is put to the ultimate test in “The Schizoid Man.” You can’t blame him for feeling more disoriented than usual. Everyone is addressing him as Number 12, and he is recruited by yet another new Number 2 to impersonate–you gussed it–himself. The Prisoner was really in the “Zone” (as in “Twilight”) with “Many Happy Returns,” in which Number 6 at last makes his escape from a seemingly deserted Village. Making his arduous way back to London, he must convince his former superiors of the Village’s existence. “It’s Your Funeral” finds an ever-vigilant and defiant Number 6 refusing to fall for yet another Village gambit (”I will not cooperate,” he thunders). But is a threat to assassinate the outgoing Number Two for real, or is it the work of “jammers,” who invent “make-believe plots” to confuse the authorities? A bonus feature of this set is an early 30-minute interview with Bernie Williams, the series’ original production manager. He comments that his job was made more difficult because the show’s premise was “unclear even to those who made it.” This is small comfort to Prisoner devotees who parse each episode, which makes this set, of course, essential. –Donald Liebenson

SOMEWHERE IN EUROPE is the first major achievement of postwar Hungarian cinema as well as a key film in the history of neorealist cinema. Directed by Geza Radvanyi and co-written by legendary film critic and scholar Bela Balazs, SOMEWHERE IN EUROPE is a De Sica-like tale of homeless war orphans in devastated postwar Hungary. Living by their wits and stealing to eat, a ragged band of scavenging children take refuge in a ruined castle, only to discover it’s inhabited by an eccentric orchestra conductor who has been emotionally and spiritually destroyed by war. Both children and adult find a renewed sense of community and hope until a bitter encounter with “civilized” society proves it’s as crul as ever. Impressively filmed by Barnabas Hegyi and produced by the Hungarian Communist Party before it took power, SOMEWHERE IN EUROPE is a rediscovered treasure that compares favorably to the greatest of Italian Neorealist films.

One simple qustion, people: Do you know where you’re goin’ to? And furthermore, Do you like the things that life is showin’ you? These qustions are posed in the unavoidable theme song (a huge Seventies hit) from Mahogany, a splashy, diva-sized vehicle for Diana Ross. Miss Ross was hot off her unexpected and critically approved starring role in Lady Sings the Blus when she embarked on this musical, a rags-to-riches saga of a Chicago girl who dreams of being a fashion designer but becomes a supermodel instead. Original director Tony Richardson was replaced behind the camera by Motown founder and puppetmaster supreme Berry Gordy, who knew something about turning Ross into an idealized vision of femininity (for more on their relationship, check out the fictionalized version in Dreamgirls).
Ross looks a little overwhelmed by the plot machinations, which take her from the orbit of a regular-guy activist (Billy Dee Williams) into the glam world of European fashion–the latter courtesy of a cranky, unstable photographer played by Anthony Perkins. Perkins is sky-high fun in this thing, as though he suspected the movie was in trouble and decided to let the tics and nerviness fly. These days Mahogany is treasured either as a fond childhood memory or as a ripe camp-fest, and that’s probably about where it belongs. Still, it looks positively restrained next to the other big diva musical of the same historical moment, Barbra Streisand’s 1976 A Star is Born. –Robert Horton

The ambitious TV event War and Remembrance was the final opus in the golden age of the maxi-miniseries. This six-disc set offers the first half (seven episodes) of ABC’s mammoth 30-hour production of Herman Wouk’s bestseller–itself a sequl to the landmark Winds of War–mixing fictional and real characters around the events of World War II. It starts a week after the attack on Pearl Harbor and abruptly stops in July 1943 with the fall of Mussolini. Only half of the first series’ lead actors return, including Robert Mitchum as the patriarch Captain “Pug” Henry. Although Mitchum is too old and less dashing than he should be, his presence is exactly what the series needs as it wavers between pop entertainment and a graphic look at the atrocities of war. The series’ multiple storylines branch from the Henry family tree, from his sons’ naval battles to his daughter-in-law’s (Jane Seymour) harrowing flight through Europe with her famous father (John Gielgud), witnessing firsthand the collapse of European Jewish life in the grip of Nazi power.
Director Dan Curtis said that after The Winds of War, the opportunity to show the Jews’ plight led him to take on another daunting production. He takes the viewer into Auschwitz with unflinching realism (producer and former internee Branko Lustig returned to the subject a decade later with Schindler’s List) and is just as deft with a few massive battle sequnces combining models with colorized footage. Sometimes the soap opera of the characters’ affairs seems pretty sappy, especially with some uneven acting. The DVD set also contains two featurettes from 1988 and 2002. –Doug Thomas
